Charity as we all know is a practice in which we donate some of our possessions to the people who are in desperate need of those things. We could donate money, clothing, and even our used cars too. Well now you can ask how donating a second hand or our used car can help anyone? The answer is there are many charitable organizations who receive our used cars for charity. A used car donation to the charity of our choice will give that charity a vehicle which might help them in the course of their work and different organizations use these donations in different ways.
But this car donation not only helps those organizations but it will allow us to receive a financial benefit in return. We can get a tax deduction for this charity. However, if the charity chooses to sell our used car donation, we can deduct the entire amount of the sales proceeds, unless it is smaller than the Blue Book value, and then we can deduct the Blue Book value. But before donating our car to any organization we need to check the status of that organization, we need to know whether that organization is government registered or not and its better that we give the donation directly not through any middleman as they can cheat the organization and us. We need to give the donation with care, if our donation is in a good condition then the organization can use it for longer or they can sell it off for a good price.
But there are some regulations and law that we have to know before donating a car according to Section 501 of the IRS Tax Code to make sure your used car donation will qualify you for a deduction, you must first determine if the charity is recognized as a non-profit organization. For vehicles valued at less than $500, the deduction amount comes from the donor’s own estimate of the car’s value and for vehicles valued at over $500; taxpayers are required to attach the charity’s written acknowledgment to their tax return.
