Donate a car to charity

We know that many people earn more than enough money every month or year, so if someone gives something to someone who is in need without any expectation we call that charity. There are different kinds of charity or for charity we can give different things like, sometime we can give money, sometime we can give cloths or anything that we don’t need that much or we don’t use them.

There are many charitable organizations around the world through which we can deliver our help to the people in need. Not only clothing or food or money but we can donate even our cars to any charitable organization. In the United States of America, these donations can give a tax benefit and have become very popular but to have that facility the donor must fulfill certain things, such as obtaining a written acknowledgment of the car’s subsequent sale by the charity. But there are some rules that we must follow before donating our car like we should give the donation directly to the organization not through any middleman or middle company as these organizations keep about 50% to 90% of the vehicle’s value for themselves, and the charities don’t get what they could have gotten. Before donating the car we need to do some research like if the organization is government registered IRS-approved 501(c)(3) organization or not? Trustworthy or not? Another thing is we should ask the organization how much of the car’s value will go to charity and If the organization gives charities flat fee or not?

Apart from all that above we need to know some other things too like we need to know for how much the organization sold the car and we need to get a slip of that, as IRS can ask about that. If our donation is worth more than $500, we’ll have to attach IRS Form 8283 to our tax return and if it’s worth more than $5,000 an outside appraisal should be included in our documentation and by doing this we can make sure that the charity gets the most benefit and we get the biggest possible deduction.
